The Origin of the Sunburst Mirror- The sunburst mirror has a fascinating history that dates right back to the 17th Century. During the 17th Century the Catholic Church began to use monstrances above the alter these elaborate designs were made up of decorative stands surrounded by glided rays of sunshine demonstrating what we know today as the sunburst style. These monstrances were often found in churches in Italy featured above the altar. The very first mirrors were very small and convex and it wasn’t until the late 17th Century that mirror production became more established and mirrors eventually increased in size.
At one time mirrors were made using a backing of mercury but these are no longer manufactured. They can also be made using silver precipitated from a silver nitrate solution. However today most mirrors are made by evaporating aluminum onto glass although other coats are applied to improve adhesion and durability. For example a black backing can be applied to improve opacity and reflectivity.
Most American furniture manufacturers include mirrors in their range of bedroom furniture and some also manufacture mirrors for the living room or dining room. Bedroom mirrors are not necessarily restricted to that room and many are used all over the house - wherever reflection and a need to expand a room are required.
Mirrored Tile Mantelpiece - For the ultimate in sparkle you can tile your entire mantelpiece in mirrored tiles. Or a for somewhat subtler approach just cover the top of the mantel in the tiles. If you are covering the entire mantelpiece you will need such tiles plus adhesive. Measure the tiles and cut where needed with a glass cutter breaking the tiles carefully along the scored line. If you plan to only add mirrored tiles to the top of the mantel you could simply arrange several of them strategically to add sparkle without the need to use the adhesive. Either way your mantel will simply shine.
The Shape of the Mirror- Wall Mirrors come in copious shapes. The most commonly found mirrors are in standard shapes such as Rectangular Circular Squares. Contemporary Designers are coming with unusual Mirror shapes which are eye-grabbing. If your room is rectangular then hang circular mirrors which will be distinctive. Oval Mirrors are ideal for all places they can be used as wall accents. If you want to be different then search for themed mirrors. They can convey your feelings to guests.
