At one time mirrors were made using a backing of mercury but these are no longer manufactured. They can also be made using silver precipitated from a silver nitrate solution. However today most mirrors are made by evaporating aluminum onto glass although other coats are applied to improve adhesion and durability. For example a black backing can be applied to improve opacity and reflectivity.
Traditionally sunburst mirrors were finished in gold however these mirrors are now available in a wide range of finishes including; silver bronze and black colours as well as wooden and even mirrored glass finishes offering a contemporary feel.
Sunburst VS Starburst - Between the 1950’s and 60’s the sunburst mirror got a slight makeover similar to the mirror pictured below these mirrors became known as starburst mirrors. Usually they featured smaller circle pieces and other decorative features on the rays.. These mirrors however are still often referred to as sunburst mirrors. When you hear the term starburst mirror it is likely referring to a sunburst mirror but perhaps may have further decorative features.
Mirrored Wall - To add sparkle light and beautiful reflections to the room you can mirror the wall behind the mantelpiece. Hang one large mirror on the wall directly behind the mantel. Or arrange several smaller ones edge to edge. Hanging several smaller mirrors is generally much less expensive than one oversized mirror. If you’re on a budget check out second hand stores or flea markets for interesting vintage mirrors. Or use mirrored wall tiles to completely cover the wall. Framed mirrors can also be used to decorate the wall behind the mantel. One large framed mirror will add an elegant look to the room. Or frame six smaller framed ones arranging them in a grid pattern which will add an interesting design to the room along with the sparkle. For added visual interest hang them on the diagonal to form diamond shapes.
The Ladies Storage Mirror is so called because it is fitted with two drawers across the base. The mirror is self-standing and can be use on any flat surface such as a dresser or sideboard. It is 37 inches wide x 31 high with a depth of 9 inches to accommodate the drawers.
